After losing in the State Championship game to Pahrump last year, the Fernley High School softball team was looking to this season in hopes of reclaiming their throne.
Now they’re just left hoping to be able to play again.
Following the announcement that all Nevada prep sports were being suspended effective March 16, the Vaqueros went into last Saturday’s doubleheader with North Valleys unsure if it would be their only chance to play this season, or if the season will be resumed at some point.
The came out with a doubleheader sweep, 12-2 and 15-4.
Senior pitcher Abby Abrahamzon allowed three hits in her first outing, and Sam Conder had three hits in each game, with an inside-the-park home run in the second game, to lead the Vaqueros to the sweep.
Catelyn Creiglow drive in four runs and eight different players had a hit.
Abrahamzon struck out two without a walk.
In the second game, sophomore Mackenzie Viehland and freshman Mackenzie Depaoli each pitched three innings. Viehland allowed one hit, struck out two and walked three, and all four runs scored against her were unearned. Depaoli allowed no hits with five strikeouts and three walks.
Katelyn Bunyard also hit a home run, and both she and Conder drove in three runs.
“Hopefully we will get to pick up where we left off in a few weeks,” coach Diane Chapin said.
