Veterans group to host memorial service at Veterans Cemetery Wednesday

Robert Perea, The Fernley Reporter

On Wednesday, May 16, the National Veterans Awareness Organization will hold a memorial service from 12:45-1:10 p.m., at the Northern Nevada Veterans Cemetery in Fernley as part of the annual National Veterans Awareness Ride. The approximately 80 motorcycle riders will be welcomed to the cemetery by a flag line and salute by the Nevada and Northern California Patriot Guard Riders.

Starting in Sacramento, Calif., each May, the riders travel across the United States to Washington, DC. Earlier on May 16, they spend the morning at the Reno Veterans Administration Medical Center.

The objective of the organization is to honor, support and remember all of the men and women from all branches of the military service.

They accomplish that objective, nationally, during 13 days in May when they ride across America, visiting Veterans hospitals and homes to spend time with veterans and thank them for their service. They speak in schools about the pride of patriotism and the importance of veterans in our society, and they participate in memorial services that honor military personnel who have paid the ultimate price for our freedom.

The ride is non-political and is open to all persons (veterans and non-veterans, motorcycle riders and non-riders) who share their beliefs and goals regarding veterans and patriotism.

Everyone is welcome to join them at the Northern Nevada Veterans Cemetery for the wreath laying ceremony.
