Fernley runners Pier Crook and Janae Derley qualified for this week’s 3A State Cross Country Championships by finishing among the top five individuals from outside of the three teams that qualified during last week’s Northern 3A Regional Meet at Shadow Mountain Sports Complex in Sparks.

Crook finished seventh overall with a time of 21:19 in the regional meet and was the No. 3 at-large qualifier. Derley finished 12th overall with a time of 21:55 and was the fourth at-large qualifier.

“Both ran hard and very intelligent races,” coach Todd Wright said.

“On the boys side, Josh Kirk ran his guts out,” Wright said. “I have never seen an individual dig down so deep and push oneself so far as Josh did at any meet or race in my life.”

Mason Tannehill and Eric Rosales were the eighth and ninth at-large finishers. Tannehill finished 22nd overall with a time of 18:53, with Eric Rosales 23rd in 18:57.

Liam Maldonado finished 36th in 20:12, Dimitri Del Peloso finished 39th and Austin Carmack was 40th, each with times of 20:36, while Antonio Rodarte was 42nd in 20:53.

For the girls, Tayler Zolyniak finished 28th in 23:45, Baylee Ringer came in 32nd in 24:23, Paitin Smith was 35th in 26:30 and Carlie Keever finished 36th in 27:12.

The state Meet starts Saturday at 10 a.m., with the 3A girls running at 12:40 p.m.
