Beth Brown started Fernley’s Garden Club last June and already has seven members with more garden enthusiasts joining daily. The Club’s Small Garden Award went to Tod Derico on Jennys Lane. Lorrie and Randy Rundle, also of Jennys Lane, won Augusts’ Large Garden Award.

“I don’t know any of the names of the plants. I bought the house about 7-8 years ago and loved how the previous owners laid out the garden so I kept it up and improved it over the years,” Derico said.

“Tod has worked hard to create lovely flower beds amid a lush green lawn. On the side of his house he even has trailing vines growing up several trellises,” Brown said.

Lorrie and Randy Rundle moved from Sparks to Fernley in 2008. They did not want grass so opted for xeriscape landscaping. One of the benefits of xeriscape gardening is the reduced need for irrigation.

When asked what part of her garden she likes the best, Lorrie replied, “I like all of it! It’s very rewarding and because we used dwarf plants there is no trimming or similar maintenance to perform.”

“The garden is a joint effort with my husband doing most of the heavy work,” she added.

Winners receive plants from Lowe’s as part of their award.

Beth notes, “We are currently searching (for) our September Garden of the Month Winners!” and suggests gardeners start “…deadheading the perennials, tidying up those flower beds and fertilizing the annuals for that last burst of color.”
