Lyon County Fair & Rodeo opens Thursday

With events and activities for all ages, the Lyon County Fair, Rodeo and Silver State Livestock show opens Thursday night at the Lyon County Fairgrounds in Yerington.

The theme of this year’s fair is “Pig Tails and Country Trails”, and members of the Lyon County Fair Board have worked throughout the year to bring a variety of entertainment for all ages. The Fair Board has also worked to promote the fair throughout the county in hopes of attracting attendees from all over the county and beyond.

The fair opens Thursday at 4 p.m. with Kid’s Night, which includes the carnival, a horseshoe pitching contest, BMX bike racing, a pedal tractor pull, pig scramble and mutton busting.

Friday’s entertainment includes the frog jump contest at 5 p.m. and the WGAS Truck and Tractor pull in the main arena at 7 p.m. The fairgrounds and carnival open at 4 p.m.

Saturday’s events start with the Silver State Youth Livestock Show at 8 a.m., with the parade downtown sponsored by the Mason Valley Chamber of Commerce at 10 a.m.

An open rodeo, hosted by Rockin M Rodeo Productions, from Red Bluff, Calif, will run from noon-3 p.m., with the carnival also opening at noon. The Littlest Cowgirl/Cowboy Contest will be at 4:30 p.m., the Demolition Derby in the main arena at 6 p.m., and Dancing Under the Stars, with live music from Sierra Express.

The fair wraps up Sunday, with the Silver State Youth Livestock Show at 8 a.m. The fair opens to the public at 9 a.m. with the carnival, Motorcycle Mania at 10 a.m. including flat track racing, a wheelie contest and motocross barrel racing. There will be an ice cream social at 1 p.m., a watermelon eating contest at 2 p.m. and the Silver State Livestock Sale at 3 p.m.

Other entertainment will be provided by Powerhouse Cloggers, Nevada Gunfighters, Players and Puppets, Jennifer’s Creations and more.

There are 15 food vendors booked for this year’s fair and about 35 craft vendors.

Admission to the fair is $2 per day.

An addition to the demo derby this year is one heat of trucks,

Fair Board secretary Lisa Tibbals said three high school students, working through the Comstock Youthworks program, have worked all summer at the fairgrounds with fair board members to get the facilities ready for the event.

“It’s going together pretty good,” Tibbals said. “There’s a lot of things to do and a lot of action.”

She said there are entries for the Silver State Livestock Show from across the state, while the exhibit halls are all full.

Miss Rodeo Nevada Jazmin Herrera of Winnemucca will be there throughout the weekend and will help with mutton busting, frog jump, the Littlest Cowboy contest to hand out prizes, She will also be racing in the motocross barrel racing on Sunday.
