Fernley track teams win Lyon County Championship in final tune-up for region meet

Both Fernley track teams easily finish first in the Lyon County Championships on May 1, the final tune-up for this week’s regional championships in Fallon.

The Fernley girls team dominated the meet, scoring more points than the other four teams combined. Fernley finished with 204.5 points, while Dayton was second with 61.5, Yerington finished third with 38, Silver Stage was fourth with 21 and Smith Valley was fifth with 15.

The boys team finished first with 151.5 points, followed by Yerington in second with 105.5, Silver stage third with 70 points, Dayton was fourth with 24 points, Smith Valley came in fifth with 13 and Pyramid Lake participated and scored 2.

Karli Burns led the girls team by winning three events. She placed first in the 100 hurdles in a time of 17.40, the 300 hurdles in 51.69 and the high jump with a leap of 4-10. Emma Parsons won two events – the long jump with a leap of 15-5 and the triple jump with a leap of 31-2.50.

Other champions for the girls team were Haunistie Hauser in the 100 meters, in 14.16; Celeste Condie in the 200 meters in 28.21; Jaiden Sullivan in the 400 meters in 1:05.83; Samantha Manning in the 800 meters in 2:34.21; Parker O’Brien in the 1600 in 6:16.79; the 4×200 relay team of Samantha Manning, Kayla Mariani, Condie and Sullivan in 1:55.73; the 4×400 team of Condie, Sullivan, Liliana Rodarte and Manning in 4:25.50; the 4×800 relay team of Reese Richardson, Condie, Baylee Ringer and Tayler Zolyniak in 11.09; Katie Slapinski in the discus with a throw of 94-5; and Heaven Conner in the pole vault at 6-6.

For the boys, Nicholas Bernardo, JR Reyes and Ricky Dumont each won three events. Reyes won the 200 meters in 24.06 and the long jump with a leap of 17-6.75. Bernardo won the 110 hurdles in 15.60 and the 300 hurdles in 44.13, while Dumont won the shot put at 40-8 and the discus at 141-10.

Other boys champions were Dalton Kinamon in the 100 meters in 11.75;; the 4×400 relay team of Bernardo, Kinamon, Carson Humes and Jonah Turner in 3:41.95; the 4×800 relay team of Humes, Corbin Mulei, Carter Chapin and Morgan Zolyniak in 9:10.20; and Colt Lemon in the pole vault with a vault of 11 feet.

The 1A, 2A and 3A regional meet will be held Friday and Saturday in Fallon. The meet begins at 2 p.m. Friday with track event trials and field event finals. Track event finals begin at 3 p.m.

Field event finals on Saturday begin at 9 a.m. and track event finals at 9:30 a.m.

While the Vaqueros have several athletes whose seed times put them in contention to qualify for the state meet.

Among the top regional seeds, Bernardo has the fastest seed time among 3A runners with times of 15.32 in the 110 hurdles and 41.59 in the 300 hurdles. Dumont has the second best seed marks in the shot put and the discus, with throws of 42-6 in the shot put and 147 feet in the discus,

The boys 4×400 relay team has the second fastest seed time of 3:35.42, run by Turner, Humes, Bernardo and Kinamon.

For the girls, the 4×400 team of Condie, Sullivan, Janae Derley and Manning have the fastest seed time of 4:20.41, while the 4×800 team of Derley, Reese Richardson, Condie and Manning have the second fastest seed time of 10:20.38.
