The Fernley girls cross country team placed three runners in the top six and the boys had two in the top five as both teams won their meet at the Fernley Roadhill Invitational on Sept. 27.
Grace DeLeon finished second with a time of 22:41, Piper Crook was third in 22:54 and Tayler Zolyniak was sixth in 23:12 to lead the Fernley girls team. Fernley scored 43 team points, easily outpointing Wooster, 62, for first place.
The boys team scored 65 points, with McQueen second with 97, behind fast runs by Jonathan Roach in third place in 19:11 and Josh Kirk fifth in 19:43.
“Our home meet is a very difficult, hilly course and it was very hot the day of the meet,” coach Todd Wright said. “The kids really stepped up and defended their home course.”
Saturday the Vaqueros competed in the 43rd Stanford Invitational, at Stanford University.
“This was the first time a team from Fernley has ever gone and ran at the Stanford Invitational,” Wright said. “It was an amazing experience for the kids. They got to race at sea-level against some amazing competition.”
All seven boys and seven girls ran personal bests. Top times for the Vaqueros were Roach at 17:14, Kirk at 17:48 and De Leon at 19:49.
