Fernley golfers place 4th at 3A State Tournament

With a strong second-day performance, the Fernley High School girls golf team placed fourth at the 3A State Tournament played Oct. 17 and 18 at two courses in the Mesquite area.

The Vaqueros shot a two-day total of 822 to edge Wooster by one stroke for fourth place, and two strokes behind Boulder City for third place.

The Vaqueros came into the tournament as the third-place team from the Northern 3A, but posted the best finish of the three Northern teams.

“The South got us but I feel like we did a good job representing the North,” coach Brian O’Neill said.

Fernley was in sixth place after the first day of the meet, shooting 418, and they were seven strokes behind Wooster and 10 behind South Tahoe, But Fernley shot 404 the second day, while Wooster shot 412 and South Tahoe posted a 419.

The Meadows easily won the team championship, shooting 369 and 362 for a two-day total of 73`.

Individually, Nadia Velasquez finished eight overall, shooting 89 both days to finish at 178. Gaia Yi had the next best finish for Fernley, finishing tied for 23rd with a total score of 214. Madison Rodriguez placed 27th for Fernley and Ruby Barrett-Reese finished 29th.
