Fernley community members invited to give feedback on new community center

The City of Fernley, in conjunction with the Fernley Community Foundation, will be hosting a community meeting at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 28 at Fernley City Hall in the Council Chambers. The purpose of the meeting is to encourage Fernley residents to provide input on features and programs they would like to see implemented at the new community center. This will be the first in a series of steps to stimulate community involvement and excitement around the project.

In 2017, the City of Fernley purchased approximately 8.5 acres around the historic Train Depot on Main St. with the vision of building a community center in the heart of Fernley. This purchase was made with revenue brought in through the Fernley Convention and Tourism Authority.

“The Community Center will provide much-needed meeting space, a central location that provides resources and programs for current and future residents in the heart of the city, city manager Daphne Hooper said. “Input from the community will help determine those needs.”

Some preliminary ideas for the new community center include amenities such as a youth center or home for the Boys and Girls Club, a community gym, and outdoor event space, but all ideas from community members will be evaluated. The city will also be welcoming community input about the design of the building.

“Our goal for the new community center is to serve those who will be using it most, the residents of Fernley,” said Cody Wagner, Board Chair of the Fernley Community Foundation. “Because of this, we are looking to our community members for input about what programs, services, and amenities they want to see in the community center. We want this to be a place they will enjoy.”
