Commission tabs Toombs as new NLCFPD director

Robert Perea, The Fernley Reporter

The Lyon County Commission voted 3-2 last Thursday to appoint Mike Toombs to fill the vacant seat on the North Lyon County Fire Protection District Board of Directors. The Commission made the appointment because the Fire Board was unable to reach a consensus at its January meeting to appoint a candidate to fill the vacancy.

At that meeting, the Board proposed four motions to appoint a replacement, but three ended in 2-2 votes and the final one died for a lack of a second.

The Board received eight applications to fill the seat vacated by the resignation of Mike Callagy.

The appointment by the Commission is to fill the seat for the remainder of the term, expiring Dec. 31, 2026.

In his presentation to the Board, Toombs said he is frustrated with politics going on within the district and said his vote on the board would be for what is best for the City of Fernley and the North Lyon County Fire District as a whole.

Commission chairman Dave Hockaday nominated Mike Toombs and the vote to approve his appointment passed 3-2. Toombs is scheduled to be sworn into office at Thursday’s fire board meeting.

Jacobson also urged those who were not selected to run for the two vacant seats that will be on the November election.
