After coming up empty in two games last weekend, the Fernley boys basketball team faces a key contest in its quest for a favorable playoff seed Tuesday in Fallon.
The Vaqueros fell into a third-place tie with Fallon at 6-4 in league play with losses last week at Elko and Spring Creek. Having already lost to Fallon in the first meeting of the season, the Vaqueros need a win over the Greenwave to have a chance at any potential tiebreakers for playoff seeding.
At Elko last Friday, the Vaqueros suffered an early knockout blow, trailing 16-4 after a quarter and 38-13 at half, on the way to a 65-47 loss.
Gabe Wilson led Fernley with 11 points and Zach Burns scored 10.
Saturday at Spring Creek, it was the fourth quarter that buried the Vaqueros in a 66-47 loss. Fernley trailed 35-27 at the half, but were still within striking distance going to the fourth quarter at 51-43. But Spring Creek outscored the Vaqueros 15-4 to run the game into a blowout.
Rei Robinett scored 13 points to lead the Vaqueros, and Russ Ortiz added 12.
