Fernley boys soccer clinches playoff berth

With a 4-0 win over Dayton Wednesday afternoon, the Fernley High School boys soccer team clinched a berth in the 3A Northern Region Tournament.

Next on the agenda is clinching the top seed.

Fernley scored twice in the first half and twice in the second to avenge the only blemish on its record during league play, a 1-1 tie at Dayton on Sept. 27.

“They did fantastic,” coach Erin Geil said. “I’m really proud of them. Awesome teamwork, great passing.”

That goal scored by Dayton during the Sept. 27 game was the only time a league opponent has scored against the Vaqueros. The Vaqueros defense was again suffocating on Wednesday, consistently winning possession at midfield, allowing the Vaqueros to control the ball in Dayton’s end of the field for most of the game.

“We have the best defense in the league,” Geil said.

Fernley leads the Northern 3A League B with an 8-0-1 record, and has clinched a spot in the top three of the league, and the playoff berth that goes with it. At 4-3-1, Battle is in second place, and the Vaqueros can clinch the top seed with two more wins.

The Vaqueros play at West Wendover on Oct. 20 and at White Pine Oct. 21, then finish the regular season by hosting Battle Mountain Oct. 26.

The Northern 3A Regional Tournament will be played Nov. 2-4 in Winnemucca. The League B No. 1 seed faces the No. 5 seed from League A.
