Playoff foe still unknown for Fernley girls

Robert Perea, The Fernley Reporter

After beating Sparks Friday night, the Fernley High School girls basketball team knows it will be the No. 4 seed for this week’s 3A Northern Region Tournament in Winnemucca.

Who they play and what time I still to be determined.

Friday’s game between Spring Creek and South Tahoe was postponed because of extreme weather, so the teams will meet in a makeup game Tuesday. The teams are currently tied for 5th place, so the winner will claim fifth place and face Fernley, while the loser will be the No. 6 seed and face Elko.

Fernley’s game will be played Thursday at either 3 p.m. or 6:20 p.m. If they win the first round game, the Vaqueros would face Fallon at 6:20 p.m. Friday. The championship game will be at 3 p.m. Saturday.

The Vaqueros wrapped up the regular season Friday with a 61-18 win over Sparks. Ali Conder lead the team with 13 points.

“We did a good job of creating turnovers and getting out in transition for a bunch of easy lay-ups,” coach John Rogers said. “The girls played really well together on Senior Night and it was nice to send them to zone with a final home victory.”

The Vaqueros had balanced scoring from everyone and Rogers said the team is learning to play better with some new additions to the squad due to recent injuries.

“I feel we are still playing our best ball at the right time but we have to continue to work if we want to qualify for state next week,” Rogers said.
