City preparing to host Spooktacular Oct. 31

Robert Perea, The Fernley Reporter

The City of Fernley is working to make its annual Safe Trick or Treating Spooktacular event its biggest ever.

This year’s Spooktacular will take place Monday, Oct. 31 from 4-7 p.m. at City Hall. Last year more than 2,400 children participated.

The city is again seeking sponsorships from local businesses and individuals. Monetary donations are used to purchase candy and small novelties to pass out to children. They are also seeking volunteers to help in passing out candy or decorating City Hall. As a sponsor, your name and logo will be placed on all materials and banners that publicize Spooktacular.

Sponsors are also invited to actively participate in the event by having their own representatives decorate a table or are and hand out candy or healthy treats.

In October 2007, the City of Fernley Youth City Council coordinated the first Spooktacular. The safe trick or treating event was held in partnership with the Lyon County Library and the Lyon County Volunteer in Policing Program (VIP’s). It was a huge success. At that time, it was a Halloween block party with a bounce house, VIP haunted house, face painting and finally a Safe and Sober Teen Dance.

The event was sponsored not only by the City of Fernley offices, but community corporate and community businesses as well. Sponsorship was and still is provided by monetary donations or employees volunteering to decorate or man tables to distribute candy.

There no longer is a Youth City Council, however, the City still sponsors the event annually decorating City Hall and handing out treats.

Last year, the Sheriff VIP’s initiated the Haunted Hallway. This year, the Haunted Hallway will be completed by Liberty Fitness.

The Fernley High School Band will be in attendance this year. They will be accepting donations for their trip to Washington, D.C.

Updates will be posted on the Fernley Spooktacular Facebook page.
