Vaqueros qualify six individuals, six relay teams for State track meet

Six was the magic number for the Fernley High School track teams at last weekend’s Northern 3A Region Meet in Fallon.

The Vaqueros boys and girls teams both finished in sixth place overall, while qualifying a total of six individuals and six relay teams for this week’s State Meet, which will be held Friday and Saturday at Desert Oasis High School in Las Vegas.

The boys team scored 66 points, while the girls finished with 59.

Nicholas Bernardo was the star for the Vaqueros, winning their only two individual region championships, while qualifying for State in four events altogether.

Bernardo won both hurdles events, running first in the boys 110 hurdles in a personal record time of 15.11, and first in the 300 hurdles in 42.20. Connor Long also contributed to the team points total by finishing sixth in the 300 hurdles in 43.86.

Bernardo was also on two of the three Fernley boys relay teams to reach the state meet.

The boys 4×200 team of Dalton Kinamon, Bernardo, Jaden Wilson and JR Reyes qualified for State by finishing fourth in a time of 1:36.92, while Bernardo, Kinamon, Jonah Turner and Carson Humes finished fourth in the 4×400 in 3:37.74.

The boys 4×800 team of Carter Chapin, Turner, Humes and Corbin Mulei also qualified by finishing fourth in 8:45.44.

Ricky Dumont and Colt Lemon will be the other Vaquero boys at the state meet. Dumont finished second in the discus by finishing second with a personal record throw of 149-7. He also placed fifth in the shot put with a throw of 39-9.5. Lemon took second in the pole vault with his personal record of 11-6.

Ryan Edwards missed the trip to State by one place in the high jump, finishing fifth with a personal record of 5-8.

For the girls, Celeste Condie and Samantha Manning led three relay teams to State.

Condie, Jaiden Sullivan, Janae Derley and Manning ran third in the 4×400 relay in a time of 4:17.65. The 4×800 team of Derley, Reese Richardson, Condie and Manning placed third in 10:23.14 and in the 4×200, Manning, Kayla Mariani, Condie and Sullivan finished fourth in 1:55.98.

Karli Burns qualified for State in the girls 100 hurdles by placing second with her personal record time of 16.48. She also had missed state by one place in two other events, taking fifth in the 300 hurdles with her personal record time of 49.79 and fifth in the high jump at 4-8.

In the 300 hurdles, Marissa Di Stefano placed sixth in 51.09 and Camille Radli was seventh in 51.90, both also personal records.

Aurora Parsons and Emma Parsons are both headed to State as well. Aurora Parsons took third in the discus with a personal record throw of 110-11, and she added to the team point total by taking eighth in the shot put at 28-7.25.

Emma Parsons finished fourth in the long jump at 15-6.5 and also had a sixth place with a personal record of 31-10 in the triple jump. Sullivan took fifth in the triple jump with her personal record of 32-1.5.
