Workman to resign as LCSD superintendent

Lyon County School District Superintendent Wayne Workman announced to the District’s Board of Trustees Tuesday night that he will be resigning at the conclusion of the current school year.

At the conclusion of his Superintendent’s Report during the Board of Trustees meeting Tuesday night at the Professional Learning Center at Silver Springs Elementary School, Workman read his resignation letter, in which he wrote that he must place his own family challenges and circumstances at the center of his life. He said his resignation will be effective June 30, 2024.

Workman was appointed superintendent in 2015 following the resignation of Carolyn McIntosh. He has previously been principal of Dayton High school and served as the district’s human resources director and deputy superintendent.

Board of Trustees President Phil Cowee asked for an agenda item be added to the board’s November meeting to discuss the superintendent vacancy.

“I remember the day you were appointed to be the superintendent was a happy day for the district office,” said Cowee, who was the district’s Director of Finance at the time. “I’ve definitely seen the growth you’ve had over the last number of years and the hard work you’ve put in for the students and staff of the Lyon County School District and you will be definitely be missed.”

Fernley mayor Neal McIntyre, who served three terms as a district Trustee and was on the board when it hired Workman said hearing Workman’s resignation broke his heart.

“You don’t know what you’ve got until you’ve lost it, and this district will find that out shortly,” McIntyre said.
