The Fernley High School boys basketball team will host Elko Friday night in a rematch of last year’s 3A North Region championship game.
The Vaqueros will also host Spring Creek Saturday afternoon, and come into this weekend with a seven-game winning streak and a 14-2 overall record. They are 1-0 in the Northern 3A East, having beaten Dayton 70-43 last Friday night.
Elko comes in with a 10-6 overall record, but 2-0 in the Northern 3A East, with wins over Fallon and Lowry.
The Vaqueros dominated both Dayton and South Tahoe last weekend. They opened the game with a 19-7 first quarter lead, then exploded for 28 points in the second quarter to lead 47-16 at halftime.
Saturday the Vaqueros built a 41-9 halftime lead over South Tahoe before easing up in the second half and finishing with a 55-37 win. Johnnie Williams led the Vaqueros with 28 points.
The previous week, the Vaqueros went 4-0 and won the championship of the Rail City Classic. They defeated Yerington 77-57, Shasta (Calif.) 73-43 and Golden Valley (Merced, Calif.)76-56, before finishing the tournament with a 76-66 win over La Salle (Milwaukie, Ore.).
In the first week of Christmas break, the Vaqueros took a trip to southern Nevada, where they beat SLAM 77-67, lost 75-63 to Boulder City and beat Lake Mead Academy 71-52.
