The Lyon County Sheriff’s Office is in need of volunteers for its auxiliary patrol, commonly known as Volunteers in Policing.
No prior law enforcement experience is necessary.
VIP’s service all areas of Lyon County, but Ed Cook, the VIP event liaison, told the Fernley Rotary Club on Feb. 21 that there are currently no VIP’s who live in the Fernley or Yerington areas. He said that means volunteers who live in Dayton must commute to Fernley or Yerington to conduct patrols, which limits the number of days in which patrols are available in those areas.
Services provided by VIPs include patrolling, house watches, serving civil papers, traffic control, special events, and VIN inspections.
For more information or to inquire about volunteering, contact VIP coordinator Larry DePaul at lcsov70@gmail.com or assistant coordinator Richard Jedlowski at lcsov82@gmail.com or call the Sheriff’s Office at (775) 463-6600 or the Fernley substation at (775) 575-3350.
