Reno mayor says she will run for re-election in 2018 and not pursue statewide office

Reno Mayor Hillary Schieve committed to run for re-election Thursday, pushing back on talk that she might run for lieutenant governor or secretary of state.

“I am going to stay, running for mayor,” Schieve said on Nevada Newsmakers. “I love this city and I think we have some work to do.

“Certainly, it has been a rumor (running for statewide office) and we’re going to break it right here on your show: I’m not running for lieutenant governor,” she said. “I can promise you that. I think it is important to continue the work that I’m doing here. I love this city and I want to make sure we continue to move forward.”

On July 24, Anjeanette Damon of the RGJ reported that Schieve was running for re-election.

Reno businessman Eddie Lorton said he will run against Schieve in 2018. Lorton also ran for mayor in 2014.

Veteran Nevadan Journalist Ray Hagar is known for fair and tough reporting and invigorating commentary.

Schieve does not foresee an adversarial campaign against Lorton, although their politics are on opposite sides of the spectrum.

“Actually, Eddie and I get along well and I don’t see any issue there,” she said. “I just focus on what I’m doing. I can’t control what other people do.”

Schieve faced a crowded field in 2014 for an open seat after former Mayor Bob Cashell stepped down after 12 years on the job.

Schieve called the 2014 race and its crowded field, “a very positive experience.”

She added: “There are a lot of people who ran for mayor that I can call on and engage with them if there is something I need help with. And they have some great ideas.”
