Joseph Maino, The Fernley Reporter
Fernley has a busy library that meets the needs of thousands of its residents every year. Two people who make the library successful are its librarians Ramona Campbell and Helen Bacock.
A U.S. citizen, Campbell is originally from Guadalajara, Mexico. She has lived in Fernley for 12 years and has three children, Carlos, a student at UNR, high school student Stephanie, and Nichole, a middle school student. Before becoming Fernley’s librarian, she studied business administration, owned her own business and worked as an accounting assistant. In 2011 Campbell applied for and successfully got the position as Fernley librarian.
Campbell says she enjoys talking to and helping the library’s patrons. Her favorite programs include Story Time, the Summer Reading Program, Movie Night and the Day of the Children celebration.
The “Third time’s the charm” for librarian Helen Bacock. She was a Fernley librarian twice before her most recent re-hire about a month ago. Bacock has lived in Fernley for 18 years, enjoys fishing and camping and has four children including a son, daughter-in-law and grandchildren who also live in Fernley.
Helen’s love of libraries started in high school when she worked as a library assistant. She also worked in the technical library at the McDonnell Douglas Corporation. Helen notes that working at the library makes her feel like she’s giving something back to the community. Her favorite part of being at the library is working with all the children.
The library provides many programs and services for its patrons including use of a fax machine, copier and scanner. Computers are also available. In addition to books, the library offers DVDs and large print, audio and e-books.
