Fire District investigating suspicious Port-a-Potty fires at city parks

Robert Perea, The Fernley Reporter

The North Lyon County Fire Protection District is investigating two suspicious Port-a-Potty fires that happened this week at city parks.

The first was reported at about 1:30 a.m. Monday at the Out of Town Park, and the second was reported Wednesday at 10:59 a.m. at Ponderosa Park.

Because of the nature of the fires, the fire district is investigating whether they were intentionally set.

“We investigate the cause and origin of every fire,” North Lyon Fire chief Jason Nicholl told the City Council Wednesday night.

Nicholl said while there are several possible ways the fires could have started, it’s particularly suspicious that two such fires happened in such a short time.

Fernley Public Works Director Dave Whalen said the cost to replace the two outhouses is about $2,500.
