Fernley swimmers qualify for state in four events

The Fernley High School swim team qualified for this week’s State Meet in Carson City in four events.

The Vaqueros sent 11 girls and four boys to last weekend’s 3A North Region Meet, also in Carson City, and all four boys qualified for State, scoring enough team points in the process to place fourth in the team standings. Truckee won the meet with 349 points, South Tahoe was second with 222, North Tahoe came in third with 220 and the Vaqueros scored 181.

The best finish for the Vaqueros came in the boys 200-yard freestyle relay, where Matt Jones, Nate Mauk, Zach Schaeffer and Brady Garrett finished second with a time of 1:47.07. They also qualified for State, om the 200-yard medley relay, placing fourth in a time of 2:02.24.

Individually, Schaeffer qualified for State in two individual events, placing fourth in the 200 individual medley with a time of 2:27.61, and fourth in the 100 backstroke in 1:06.72.

In other results, Garrett had a fifth place finish in the boys 100 freestyle with a time of 58.16, while Matt Jones finished seventh in the same race in 1:00.05. Mauck finished sixth in the boys 50 freestyle with a time of 26.77; In the boys 200 freestyle, Garrett finished sixth in 2:13.48 and Jones came in seventh in 2:17.34; and Schaeffer was seventh in the boys 100 backstroke in 1:19.64. and eight in the boys 100 breaststroke in 1:23.02.

The girls team placed eighth in the team standings with 60 points. Truckee won the regional title with 469 points, followed by Damonte Ranch with 312, North Valleys with 209 and South Tahoe at 163.

The best finish for the girls was in the 200 yard medley relay sixth, where Ellie Chapin, Karlyn Mortenson, Rylie Pearson, Brynne Wilcox swam in 2:26.53. The girls 200 freestyle relay team of Claire Wilcox, Elizabith Wilcox, Brynne Wilcox, Megan Walker Coghlan placed seventh in 2:05.22 and Rylie Pearson came in seventh in the girls 500 freestyle in 6:10.83.
