Volleyball opens league play at Dayton

The Fernley High School volleyball team opens league play Friday night in the Northern 3A East with a match at 6 p.m. in Dayton.

The Vaqueros have won six consecutive matches and are 11-2 so far this season.

They won two matches last week, defeating Hug in three sets, 25-15, 27-25, 25-13. Arianna Mathern led the way with eight kills, while Justice Artiaga added five kills.

Friday the Vaqueros beat South Tahoe 26-24, 27-25, 20-25, 28-26. Mathern had nine kills, Marli O’Neil added eight and Artiaga had six.

Girls soccer to host Spring Creek, Elko

After an unbeaten start through their first five league games, the Vaqueros suffered their first two losses in league play last weekend. They will take a 4-2-1 league record, 5-7-1 overall, into this weekend’s games against Spring Creek and Elko.

Fernley will host Spring Creek Friday at 1:30 p.m., and Elko Saturday at noon.

The Vaqueros started league play with wins over White Pine 4-1, West Wendover 14-0, Battle Mountain 10-0 and Dayton 2-0.

Last week, the Vaqueros lost 7-0 to Fallon on Friday, then 1-0 to Lowry on Saturday. Goaltender Lilliana Perez made 11 saves against Lowry, after making 12 against Fallon.

Boys soccer takes 3-game win streak on the road

The Vaqueros boys soccer team takes a 4-1 league record, 4-5 overall, into this week’s games on the road at Spring Creek Friday and Elko Saturday.

The Vaqueros haven’t played since beating Fallon 1-0 last Wednesday. Senior Jordi Flores tallied the game’s only goal off an assist from Jiovani Paredes.

In their previous game, the Vaqueros beat Dayton 7-0 behind two goals each by Flores and Ethan Hardman. Luis Salazar had three assists, Joseph Lash had two and Flores added one assist.

Elko leads the Northern 3A East with a 3-0-1 record, with Fernley and Spring Creek tied for second at 4-1.

Paz wins Fernley Roadhill Invitational

Fernley senior Kael Paz took first place and the Fernley boys cross country team finished with three of the top five and four of the top seven finishers at the Fernley Roadhill Invitational last Thursday.

Paz beat the rest of the field by more than a minute and finished first with a time of 18.29. Teammate Joe Perkins finished second with a time of 19:41. Alex Mergell finished fifth in 20:04 and Cael Wilson finished seventh with a time of 20:25.

Overall the Vaqueros took first place with 27 points, while Fallon was second with 35 and Oasis Academy had 71. Seven schools had runners in the race but only three fielded full teams.

In the girls race, Fernley’s Corbyn Gillespie was Fernley’s top finisher in fourth place with a time of 27:00, with teammate Emma Flack fifth in 27:22.

Battle Mountain’s Danielle Madalena was the individual winner with a time of 25:27, while Dayton edged Fernley for first place as a team with 21 points, to Fernley’s 24.
