Fernley girls team, two individual boys qualify for 3A State cross country meet

The Fernley High School girls cross country team and two individual members of the boys team qualified last Friday for the 3A State Meet, which will be held this Saturday at Rancho San Rafael Park in Reno.

The girls team placed fourth in the 3A Northern Region Meet, which was also held at Rancho San Rafael Park last Friday. The boys team placed sixth. The top four teams in each race and the top seven individuals from nonqualifying teams qualified as individuals.

For the Fernley girls, Kori Scott was the top individual finisher, placing 18th with a time of 24:33. She was followed across the finish line by Laila Kinnick in 19th place with a time of 24:36 and Corbyn Gillespie in 20th place with a time of 24:48. Trinity Garcia-Anders finished 34th with a time of 26:45 and Telaine Wasson came in 43rd with a time of 26:47.

Kinnick and Garcia-Anders were at-large state qualifiers last year, with Kinnick finishing 33rd and Garcia-Anders placing 48th.

Fernley finished fourth as a team with 113 points, edging out Elko, which compiled 117 points, for the fourth state berth. Truckee won the regional championship with 34 points and Spring Creek finished second with 40. The individual region champion was Lyla Landy of South Tahoe with a time of 19:48.

For the boys, Kael Paz finished fourth overall with a time of 17:55. He was an individual state qualifier last year as well and finished eighth at state. Alex Mergell was Fernley’s second state qualifier, placing 17th overall with a time of 19:18. Skyler Ledesma-James came in 34th with a time of 20:32, Cael Wilson finished 36th in 21:08, Tonatiuth Velazquez finished 37th in 21:12, Kevin Rodriguez placed 40th in 21:38 and Sean Perez was 52nd with a time of 24:58.

Fernley finished sixth as a team with 123 points. Spring Creek came in first with 51 points and Truckee was second with 67. The individual champion was Austin Key of North Valleys with a winning time of 16:53.
