Fernley boys gearing up for 3-game homestand

Robert Perea, The Fernley Reporter

Starting with a three-game homestand this week, the Fernley High School boys basketball team will have eight of its final nine games of the season at home as it fights for playoff positioning.

Fernley will host Dayton at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, then Spring Creek visits at 7:30 p.m. Thursday and the Vaqueros host Elko at 2:30 p.m. Saturday. Their only road game during the final four weeks of the season will be Jan. 29 at Sparks.

Fernley heads into the second half of league play with a 4-5 league record that ties them for sixth place in the Northern 3A with North Valleys. They are coming off a pair of losses last weekend that snapped a four-game winning streak and left them without their two leading scorers Saturday afternoon.

Lowry got the early jump on the Vaqueros, leading 13-6 after one quarter and 30-17. The Vaqueros found the range from the 3-point line in the third quarter, with Rei Robinett hitting two 3-pointers, and Drew Miller and Shane Deweerd each hitting one.

However, Robinett and Miller each suffered ankle injuries on the same play in the third quarter, and each missed the rest of the game, and Saturday’s game at Fallon.

Robinett and Daunte Ceresola each scored 10 points for the Vaqueros, while Miller had seven.

Without Robinett, their leading scorer, and Miller, their second leading scorer and leading rebounder, the Vaqueros were shorthanded in Saturday’s game at Fallon.

Fallon opened the game with a 24-point first quarter and followed that up with 23 in the second to lead 47-14 at halftime, on the way to a 71-31 win.

Carson Kingston had 20 points for Fernley.
