Softball: Vaqueros aim to topple Greenwave
Robert Perea, The Fernley Reporter
The Fernley High School softball team has had little trouble with most of the rest of the Northern 3A.
But they haven’t yet solved the riddle that has been the Fallon Greenwave.
The Vaqueros are 15-2 in league play, in second place behind Fallon, and have outscored all their orther foes 194-27.
But the Vaqueros have lost twice to Fallon, 3-1 and 11-1, in their first two meetings of the season, and hope to break through against the Greenwave in Tuesday’s season series finale at 3 p.m. in Fallon.
The Vaqueros are coming off a sweep of South Tahoe, 6-1 last Thursday and 7-6 in 8 innings and 10-0 last Friday.
Hailee Edgar led the way in the first game of the series with three hits, scoring two runs.
In the first game of Friday’s doubleheader, the Vaqueros trailed 3-2 in one of their few close games of the season, before scoring 4 runs in the sixth inning. South Tahoe answered with 3 in the seventh to tie the game, but the Vaqueros pushed a run across in the eighth for the win.
Edgar led the offense with two hits, while Colby Johnson scored two runs.
In the series finale, Natalie Steward went 3-3 and Justina Hawley ad Hannah Curtis both had two hits, as seven different players drove in a run and eight different players scored.
