As Lyon County School District students returned to class on Monday from winter break, the district’s new policy banning cell phones during school took effect.

In November, the Board of Trustees approved updates to the district’s Policy EDBB — Use of Cellphones and Other Electronic Devices by Students and Employees.

Under the new policy, cellphones and other electronic devices must be turned off during instructional time and kept out of sight unless approval is granted by the site administrator and teacher for specific learning purposes.

For grades K-8, instructional time is defined in the policy as the start of school until dismissal. For high school students, instructional time is defined as time spent in a classroom or during a class period.

According to a statement from the district, the policy sets clear expectations for appropriate device use during school hours and on school grounds, outlines prohibited uses, and details disciplinary actions for violations.

The policy includes a provision that allows students to use their phones with the permission of the teacher or site administrator, and in case of an emergency.

The policy also states that use of cellphones or other electronic devices by staff should be limited to enhance the learning environment of students.
