Fernley’s Madison Rodriguez placed 31st at the 3A State Girls Golf Championships place Oct. 15-16 at Dayton Valley Golf Course.
Rodriguez was the only Fernley player to qualify for this year’s state meet. She ranked 12th in the Northern 3A during the season with an average score of 104.1, which earned her second-team All-League honors. She was the fifth out of seven at-large qualifiers from the North.
At State, she posted a two-day score of 228, shooting 116 in the first round and 112 in the second. In the regular season meet in Dayton, Rodriguez shot 103.
“The state tournament is always set up a little tougher, so I know she was disappointed in her result,” Fernley coach Brian O’Neill said. “If we compiled the best parts of her game over the two days, she really played much better than her score showed.”
O’Neill said Rodriguez set her mind to qualifying for state after her sophomore year ad has worked hard the last two off seasons and made it a reality. She was the No. 2 scorer on last year’s team which qualified for State as a team.
“She definitely showed that the off season is when you improve your game and the other players recognized that as well,” O’Neill said.
