Davy Stix column: “A republic if you can keep it”
By Davy Stix
Friends, first I want to share how excited and humbled I am to have been asked to write this column for the first edition of Fernley’s newest newspaper. Thank you, Rachel and Robert. Now let’s get rolling.
How fitting that the column this month is about the election and our most sacred right to vote. Voting in America is one of the most precious and important acts we are allowed, however voting comes with an enormous responsibility and demands our research and homework. Hold that thought.
As the old saying goes and I’m paraphrasing, if we forget history we’re doomed to repeat it. We must never forget what happened in 2019. Covid changed our lives in so many ways and when it comes to voting, it was, and don’t pardon the pun, it was not immune from the totalitarian makeover we’ll have to live with for some time. I know your saying “OK Stix, where in the hell are you going” Is it any surprise that Pennsylvania and Nevada were so late in getting their votes totaled? In Nevada like most of the Democrat swing states in 2019 and 2020, mail in voting became law. Oh, and the real tragedy was the postmark scandal. Like thieves in the night, the Democrat-controlled Legislature led by the Dictator himself, Steve Sisolak, met behind closed doors in the dead of night in the name of public health with no public debate and passed some of the most sinister voting bills ever. All voters will get a ballot whether you want one or not and the magic was that the ballot only needed to be postmarked on or before election day. These laws spawned the word and act of ballot harvesting, of which is a tragedy in its own, especially since I’m from the world of agriculture. And it doesn’t matter how long the counting takes, we’re the ruling class and we know best. Think about it, all those ballots needing to be opened, I’m sure a machine did the casting of who is getting the vote and then all the painstaking time of matching every signature to a signature recorded on your last driver’s license renewal. WOW! Remember when we all knew by 10 p.m. or even midnight who won all the elections? Not anymore. Just a reminder in the last Legislative session and Governor Lombardo’s first session, he tried to get legislation through that would have required mail-in ballots to be in the poll locations by the end of election day. No go! Never made it out of committee.
So here is my point. People who would have, during most normal election years, sat on their butts too lazy to do the research and the homework of choosing a candidate or how to vote on a ballot question, which is their right to do so, and have not voted like so many other past elections, their right as well. Please yes, stay home. These nonvoters would have gotten a knock on the door from someone working for the Democratic Party asking all the right questions and offering to help fill out their ballot, making sure you don’t forget your signature and even conveniently taking said ballot to the designated drop-off location. Boom the big bang theory, ballot harvesting is born, or the new age of ballot harvesting, and it’s all legal. I’m predicting if the Super Pac of Elon’s friends is successful, the Democrats will be screaming to end harvesting. I also believe that my November column will be defending the Electoral College.
So if you don’t want to do the work, stay home, lock the door and don’t vote. We have your backs.
