Dayton officially drops football

Robert Perea, The Fernley Reporter

Dayton, a former Northern 3A member which was attempting to play this season as an independent, has instead dropped its football program, the Nevada Interscholastic Activities Association announced Thursday.

Dayton had announced its intention to play this season as an independent after its application to drop from the Northern 3A to the Northern 2A was rejected by the NIAA. Most of the Northern 2A member schools had voted against Dayton’s application to drop down in class for football only.

During the past offseason, Dayton had hired former Fernley assistant Steve McCarthy as its head coach.
