City recruiting to fill McCassie’s Ward 2 council seat

Robert Perea, The Fernley Reporter

The City of Fernley is recruiting to fill the city council seat for Ward 2 being vacated by Dan McCassie, after a judge’s ruling last week in Third Judicial District Court in Yerington.

Judge John Schlegelmilch ruled Feb. 6 that McCassie must resign his council seat because he has moved out of Ward 2.

McCassie announced in November that he was moving within the city but outside of Ward 2, but he remained on the council pending a court ruling because state statutes do not clearly define what happens when city council members move within the city but outside of their ward.

Whoever is selected to replace McCassie will serve the remainder of his term, which expires in November.

Applicants must have been a resident of the City of Fernley for one year, and currently reside in Ward 2. The Fernley City Council meets on the first and third Wednesday of every month at 4 p.m. or 5 p.m. Additional special meetings are held throughout the year as needed, such as budget hearings. Council members are asked to serve on other committees which could result in additional meetings as well.

This is a part-time position with an approved fiscal year salary for 2019-2020 of $12,459.

If you would like to be considered for the vacancy, submit an application along with a completed questionnaire to Human Resources by February 21st at 4:00 pm. Complete applications will be screened, and a Special City Council Meeting will be held to conduct interviews to successful applicants. The City of Fernley employment application, City Council Candidate Questionnaire, and Ward Map can all be found on the City’s webpage at www.cityoffernley.org/Jobs.
