1st Option hosts Open House for new fourplexes

Robert Perea, The Fernley Reporter

Although new industries moving into Northern Nevada are bringing large numbers of new jobs, the rising cost of housing all the region is pricing out many of those employees.

That is creating the need for affordable housing, and although home prices are lower in Fernley than in the Reno/Sparks area, the city is experiencing the same need for housing that many of the employees in those jobs can afford.

On Oct. 18, 1st Option Realty hosted an Open House to show off a new fourplex built by Sean McCarthy and Starlite Dr., LLC. The fourplex includes a small two bedroom unit, two larger two-bedroom units and a three-bedroom unit. The unit is the first of five planned on Sunny Ln.

Although each of the four units completed last month have already been leased, Dana Uhlhorn of 1st Option Realty said work on the next two units was planned to begin immediately.

“Real estate prices going up has created the need for multi-family dwellings,” Fernley Chamber of Commerce president Kelly Brye said during the ribbon cutting ceremony. “This is super exciting and just as chamber member this is really, really exciting.”

Mayor Roy Edgington echoed Bryes comments.

“Every city in the state is having the same problem, not enough affordable housing,” Edgington said.
